Thrikkakara Vamanamoorthy Temple, near Kochi in Kerala, is one of the most sacred temples associated with the Onam festival. It is traditionally believed to be the place where Vishnu appeared as Vamana before King Mahabali.
According to legend, Mahabali, a righteous and generous Asura king, was performing a yajna when Vamana approached him and asked for three paces of land. Vamana then assumed his cosmic form as Trivikrama and covered the earth and heavens in two steps. Mahabali offered his own head for the third step.Vishnu blessed him and allowed him to return once every year—this return is celebrated as Onam.
