Hoysaleswara Temple at Halebidu, Karnataka, is one of the greatest masterpieces of Hoysala architecture, built in the 12th century during the reign of King Vishnuvardhana.
The temple is a remarkable Dvikuta (twin-shrine) temple, dedicated to Shiva. The two sanctums house Hoysaleswara and Shantaleswara,(One is allowed to take a pic of only the Santaleswara Shivalinga.)
traditionally associated with King Vishnuvardhana and his queen Shantala Devi.
The temple was built using chloritic schist (soapstone), a relatively soft stone that allowed the sculptors to create incredibly intricate jewellery, expressions, ornaments and miniature figures. With time, the stone hardens, helping preserve these details.
Hoysaleswara Temple forms part of the “Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas,” inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023.
