Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, described as the world’s highest-paid prime minister, is set to receive a significant salary increase.
On Tuesday (September 8, 2026), he told Parliament that Singapore would raise the salaries of its political leaders. The move will increase his pay by more than 60%, making it one of the highest salaries among political leaders worldwide.
Singapore has said that higher ministerial salaries help attract talent and improve governance. Ministers in Singapore are paid significantly more than the average citizen.
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said that following the salary hike, his annual pay will rise from 2.2 million Singapore dollars (₹16.49 crore) to 3.6 million Singapore dollars (₹27.01 crore).
The Deputy Prime Minister’s salary will increase from 1.87 million Singapore dollars (₹14.03 crore) to 3.06 million Singapore dollars (₹22.95 crore). Meanwhile, Cabinet ministers will receive salaries ranging from 1.80 million Singapore dollars (₹13.50 crore) to 2.88 million Singapore dollars (₹21.60 crore), depending on their seniority and the importance of their portfolios.
