US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he expects the Iran war to end “immediately” after the United States holds its midterm elections in November.
Speaking to journalists, Trump claimed Iran “can’t hold out any longer” and accused Tehran of being “desperate to try and affect” the election. However, a Wall Street Journal report cited US officials as saying that Trump’s top advisers are privately warning that the conflict could continue for the remaining two years of his term.
Meanwhile, as Washington steps up economic pressure on Iran, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors voted on Wednesday to refer Tehran to the UN Security Council over its alleged nuclear “non-compliance”. The resolution was passed 23-3, with eight countries abstaining. Russia, China and Niger voted against the measure.
