Italy is preparing measures to ban face coverings including burqas and niqabs in schools and limit the number of foreign students per class, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced on Sunday.
Speaking at a youth event organised by her Brothers of Italy party, Meloni said the measures would also require some parents of foreign students facing serious integration difficulties to learn Italian.
Meloni did not specify the proposed maximum number of foreign students per classroom. She argued that schools should ensure integration and said students should attend classes with their faces uncovered.
According to research cited by Reuters, students without Italian citizenship account for about 11.6% of school enrolment in Italy. The measures are expected to be presented to the Council of Ministers.
