Bayalu Anjaneya Temple, Karnataka

Bayalu Anjaneya is a distinctive form of Hanuman associated with Tumakuru (Tumkur) in Karnataka. The Kannada word “Bayalu” means open space, and the deity is traditionally associated with an image of Hanuman that was originally exposed in the open rather than housed inside a conventional shrine. The temple constructed later.

What makes this vigraha particularly rare is its unusual iconography: Hanuman is depicted carrying Shri Rama upon his shoulders, recalling Hanuman’s unwavering service and devotion to Sri Rama. The image is carved from rock and is striking for its monumental scale and powerful sculptural form.

The shrine is popularly known as Bayalu Anjaneya, and the form represents the ideal of Hanuman as the supreme sevaka and devotee of Rama—strength completely surrendered to Dharma.
