Artificial intelligence, semiconductors and quantum technology are set to become major areas of India’s next infrastructure investment push, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in Bengaluru on Saturday. She stressed the need for greater investment in AI hardware, computing infrastructure, training and skills as emerging technologies reshape infrastructure requirements.
Sitharaman said the growth of AI will increase demand for advanced computing, reliable power and supporting infrastructure. She also highlighted the importance of developing skilled talent alongside physical infrastructure to support these technologies. Her remarks come as India expands its semiconductor ecosystem, with the government recently outlining Semicon 2.0’s focus on chip design, fabrication, advanced packaging, equipment, research and talent development. Government data says around ₹1 lakh crore in investment commitments have already been received under the programme.
