One of the most fascinating traditions of this ancient Shiva temple is the Panchavarneswarar—the sacred Swayambhu Linga believed to display five different colours during the day.
🟤 Copper
🔴 Light Red
🟡 Molten Gold
🟢 Emerald Green
🌈 Multicoloured
Tradition says the transformation occurs approximately every 2 hours and 20 minutes, giving the deity the name Panchavarneswarar — the Lord of Five Colours. The reason behind this remarkable phenomenon remains a subject of fascination.
The temple is also associated with Saint Appar, who is believed to have received initiation from Shiva here—hence the rare tradition of placing the Sataari (sacred feet) upon devotees’ heads, as in Vaishnava temples.
A temple where Shiva is not merely worshipped, but experienced through mystery, colour and ancient tradition.
