South Korea’s Defence Ministry on Oct 12 opened Army’s first AI transformation (AX) base at Pangyo Techno Valley, south of Seoul — often called Korea’s Silicon Valley. The facility will collect physical AI data and train humanoid and multi-legged robots to transport supplies to risky areas, dispose of explosive ordnance and clear landmines.Around 150 officials attended opening, including Science & ICT Ministry, industry ministry and Presidential National AI Committee.
Operated with Ajou University, it is first of five planned AX bases. Others planned in Yongsan (command & control), Daejeon (agentic AI with KAIST), Busan (maritime logistics) and Yangjae (automated target recognition). Move aims to offset personnel shortage amid falling birth rate and reduce troop exposure to fatal missions.
