Mass protests took place in Italy against inflation, low wages and poor public services. Demonstrations turned violent in parts of Milan and Bologna, with shops vandalised and police officers attacked.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the violence, saying that peaceful protest is every citizen’s right, but damaging public property and attacking police officers is unacceptable.
Following the violence, around 50 people were detained in Milan, while at least seven were detained in Bologna. Protests against inflation and the rising cost of living also took place in France, where police arrested around 400 people.
