US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described India as a refining superpower, saying it has the capability to process heavy Venezuelan crude and help stabilize global oil supplies.
Speaking in Mumbai during his three-day visit to India, he said Indian companies like Reliance Industries have processed such crude in the past and retain the expertise.
He said India also holds pre-existing oil concessions in Venezuela that can boost production. Rubio said the US delegation will discuss producing oil in Venezuela with Reliance and visit its Jamnagar refinery.
He noted India has made substantial progress in diversifying oil imports away from Russia, calling it smart, while acknowledging sanctions-related hurdles remain.
