Indian-American Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna has secured a sixth term in the US House of Representatives, defeating Republican challenger Ritesh Tandon in California’s 17th Congressional District during the 2026 midterm elections.
Khanna, 50, won the Silicon Valley constituency with a commanding lead, securing approximately 72% of the votes counted when the race was called.
A vocal critic of President Donald Trump’s tariffs on India, Khanna has repeatedly raised concerns about the impact of US trade policies on bilateral relations.
Born in Philadelphia to Indian immigrant parents, Khanna has represented California’s 17th District since 2017 and is known for his positions on technology, manufacturing, workers’ rights and foreign policy.
His victory comes as Democrats secured major gains in the midterm elections, strengthening their position in Congress.
