Will Mamata Banerjee Contest Again from Nandigram?

The Election Commission has announced by-polls for 5 Assembly seats and 1 Lok Sabha seat across 4 states. Voting will be held on October 6 for West Bengal’s Reginagar and Nandigram, Tamil Nadu’s Madurantakam and Dharapuram, Puducherry’s Thattanchavady and Assam’s Nagaon Lok Sabha seat.

Results on October 9.The hottest seat is Nandigram, vacated after CM Suvendu Adhikari resigned. Adhikari had won both Bhawanipur and Nandigram in 2026 Assembly polls, later retaining Bhawanipur.Former CM Mamata Banerjee lost to Suvendu in Bhawanipur by 15,105 votes in 2026 and is not an MLA now. Speculation is whether she will contest from Nandigram to make a comeback in Assembly.

Nandigram holds special significance for Mamata – the 2007 anti-land acquisition movement there established her as a mass leader, leading to end of 34-year Left Front rule in 2011.Notification on Sept 9, last date for nomination Sept 16, scrutiny Sept 17, withdrawal Sept 19.
