Health benefits of Peanuts

Peanuts may be small, but they provide a useful combination of protein, unsaturated fats, fiber, vitamins, and minerals.  They can be a convenient addition to meals or snacks and may help make a meal more satisfying.

Peanuts and other nuts can fit into heart-conscious eating patterns when they replace less nutritious snack foods, particularly because they provide unsaturated fats and other beneficial nutrients.  They also contribute protein and can be part of a balanced diet that includes vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and other protein sources.

However, peanuts are energy-dense, so portion size matters if you are managing your overall calorie intake.  Choose minimally processed peanuts when possible and be mindful of versions with excessive salt, sugar, or added oils.

People with peanut allergies should avoid peanuts and products containing them because allergic reactions can be serious.

For most people who tolerate them, a reasonable serving of peanuts can be a nutritious way to add protein, healthy fats, and other nutrients to the diet.
