This particular form of Mahadev is truly rare and intriguing.
When we think of Adi Yogi Mahadev, the first image that comes to our mind is that of Shiva — serene, ascetic, powerful, with His matted locks, third eye and a beautifully defined, divine face.
But here, Mahadev appears in a remarkably different form — with a slightly rounded belly, giving Him a very human and household-like appearance.
Interestingly, in West Bengal, during Shivratri, similar clay images of Mahadev are traditionally created in several places, where Baba is often depicted with a prominent belly. This has always made me wonder — why is this particular and unusual form of Mahadev so strongly associated with Bengal?
Because when we imagine Mahadev, the image that instinctively appears in our minds is the slender, ascetic form of Shiva.
And then I came across this fascinating representation at Bateshwar Dham near Agra, Uttar Pradesh.
It is believed that here, Mahadev and Maa Parvati are worshipped in the form of Seth and Sethani (a wealthy merchant couple), with Ganesha accompanying them.
A fascinating reminder that Mahadev is beyond any single form or appearance.
He is the eternal Divine who can manifest as the great Adi Yogi, the ascetic, the householder — and even in the humble form of an ordinary human being.
