Angala Parameswari Sametha Thandavaraya Swamy Temple, Kattumannarkoil

Angalamman (an avatar of Goddess Parvati/Kali). While she is traditionally depicted in a sitting position, she is highly revered in specific temples across Tamil Nadu in a reclining or sleeping posture.
Local faith holds this Vigraha to be Swayambu meaning it formed naturally out of the earth rather than being carved by a sculptor.
In this specific reclining posture, she represents a protective guardian form (similar to Masani Amman or Putlur Amman) who is believed to absorb the grievances, illness, and burdens of her devotees.
