The Ganga’s fierce currents have triggered panic in Raghopur. A 100-year-old Chaiti Durga Temple, built on the dam, was swept into the river and collapsed like a house of cards. The visuals of the temple collapsing are alarming.
After the marginal dam and the temple, the old railway line is now facing a major threat. Continuous erosion is taking place near the railway track, raising fears of major destruction if the dam is breached. There are also concerns that the Ganga could eventually threaten nearby residential areas.
The administration is on alert, and there are demands for flood-control measures on a war footing to stop the erosion. The entire embankment area is being evacuated as authorities work to protect the railway line and surrounding areas.
