A beautiful Braj tradition says:
“When the deities left Vrindavan, only Yamuna and Baladeva remained behind.”
During the Mughal attacks, Shri Govind Dev Ji was moved to Jaipur for protection, but Bade Dauji Maharaj is believed to have remained in Braj. Tradition says that priests protected the heavy deity by concealing Him in a sacred kund.
Later, around 1778 CE, Dauji Maharaj appeared in a dream to the Queen of Karoli, after which the present temple was established and the deity was reconsecrated.
In the sacred land of Vrindavan, Shri Bade Dauji Maharaj (Lord Balarama) is worshipped as the elder brother of Lord Krishna. His story reflects his deep and inseparable connection with Braj Bhumi.
Built in the 16th century under Raja Man Singh of Jaipur, the original temple complex housed Shri Govind Dev Ji and Bade Dauji Ji side by side.
