Hawaii’s iconic 550 year old Holei Sea Arch collapses into Pacific Ocean

Hawaii’s famous Holei Sea Arch, a historic 550-year-old natural lava-rock structure, has collapsed into the Pacific Ocean, marking the end of one of the most photographed landmarks along the Big Island’s rugged coast. Standing 90 feet high at the end of Chain of Craters Road in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the structure was visible on September 23 but was discovered gone by September 27.

According to the National Park Service (NPS), the collapse likely occurred during temporary park closures amid Tropical Storm Nolo, following years of cumulative damage caused by relentless coastal erosion, 2018 Kilauea volcanic earthquakes, and heavy storm swells.
