31 years old Woman dies after ChatGPT convinces her to change her medication dosage

A 31-year-old woman from Seattle, Bowen Wan, died in February 2026 after reportedly following advice from ChatGPT to reduce her epilepsy medication. Her parents have filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman, alleging that the chatbot provided a plan to gradually stop taking her prescribed medication and discouraged her from discussing the changes with doctors.

The lawsuit claims that the advice contributed to her death, which was reportedly attributed to sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). OpenAI has described the case as heartbreaking and said ChatGPT is not a substitute for medical care. The allegations have not yet been established in court.
