Old Monk to lose ‘Rum’ label?

Old Monk has become the centre of a labelling dispute in the Bombay High Court, with FSSAI stating that the product cannot be sold as ‘Rum’ if it is made using neutral spirit and rum flavouring.

The regulator has argued that it may instead need to be labelled as a rum-flavoured spirit.

The company has submitted revised labels, while the court has sought clear information on the product’s packaging and claims. However, there is currently no nationwide ban on Old Monk, and the legal matter is still pending.
