West Bengal Textbooks may replace ‘Pani’, ‘Abba’, ‘Ammi’ with ‘Jal’,’Baba’, ‘Maa’ under proposed curriculum changes!

Bengali-language textbooks in West Bengal government schools may undergo major revisions, with a curriculum review committee recommending changes to language, history and literature lessons.
The committee, headed by Kalyani University Professor Debashis Chatterjee, has proposed replacing words such as “pani”, “abba” and “ammi” with “jal”, “baba” and “maa”, respectively.
Chatterjee stated that the words proposed for removal are not commonly used in everyday Bengali conversations.
The recommendations also include introducing lessons on Hindu nationalist leader Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee while reducing portions covering Mughal rule, British colonial history and Marxist ideology.
The proposals remain recommendations and have not yet been confirmed as implemented changes to the school curriculum.
